  • Description

GHANA'S COMMISSIONER FOR ECONOMIC AFFAIRS, MR. E.N. OMABOE, WARNED THAT THE IMPORT OF TEXTILES INTO GHANA MAY HAVE TO BE REGULATED IN FUTURE IN ORDER TO PROMOTE AND ENCOURAGE LOCAL TEXTILE INDUSTRIES. HE WAS SPEAKING AFTER A TOUR OF SOME OF GHANA'S TEXTILES INSTALLATIONS AT TEMA.

MR. OMABOE, VISITING FIRST THE STATE TEXTILES FACTORY AT TEMA, SAID THAT LOCAL TEXTILE FACTORIES HAD REACHED THE STAGE WHERE THEY COULD MEET LOCAL DEMAND, AND EVEN BEGIN TO EXPORT.

MR. OMABOE WAS MAKING HIS TOUR TO FIND OUT SOME OF THE PROBLEMS OF THE TEXTILE INDUSTRY.

HIS SECOND VISIT WAS TO THE GHANA TEXTILE PRINTING COMPANY, A JOINTLY-OWNED STATE AND PRIVATE ENTERPRISE. MR. OMABOE WOULD HOLD UP HIS TOUR BY VISITING THE GHANA TEXTILE MANUFACTURING COMPANY, A PRIVATE-OWNED CONCERN.

AT THE CONCLUSION, MR. OMABOE SAID THAT GHANA'S TEXTILE INDUSTRY WAS OPEN TO EXPANSION AND THE GOVERNMENT FELT THAT IT COULD BE DEVELOPED INTO A MAJOR EXPORT INDUSTRY.
