  • Description

The Israeli Knesset (parliament) approved the recently-initialled interim agreement with Egypt on Wednesday (3 September) after a heated nine hour debate.

Knesset's approval left the way open for the signing of the agreement in Geneva on Thursday (4 September),and was greeted by mass demonstrations in support of the result.

The final vote was 70 to 43 in favour, with seven abstentions, and it marked the first time in the Knesset's history that all 120 members were present and took some part in a vote.

Thousands of demonstrators gathered outside Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin's office to voice their approval of the vote with speeches, song and chants.

Mr. Rabin said, in presenting the agreement to parliament, said it marked a "turning point in Israeli-Arab relations". He praised Egyptian President Anwar Sadat for his "realistic approach" in trying to settle the conflict between the two countries.

But the debate grew fiery when Likud Party Leader, Menahem B???gin, to seek a formal, non-belligerency declaration from the Arabs.

He was supported by other Opposition party members and members of the Government, including former Defence Minister, Mosche Dayan, who voted against the agreement.

Catcalls by members of all parties punctuated the marathon debate, but the voting went exactly as predicted.
