    British Judo experts won an important international match which took place at the Crystal Palace Sports Centre, London on Sunday (23 May).

    Teams from Great Britain, West Germany, the Netherlands and Belgium took part in the competition, which was sponsored by a men's perfume firm and is one of the last prior to the Montreal Olympics.

    West Germany took second place, with 1976 German Lightmiddle Weight Champion Englebert Doerbrandt beating Philippe Nicolas of Belgium by two points. The Netherlands were third in the overall results, with team-member E. Baselmans fighting Britain's 1972 Olympic bronzes medallist Brian Jacks to a draw.

    In their encounters with the British teams, only the Netherlands managed to win a match, with Dutch Middleweight Champion Theo Knejens beating Brian Jacks on a penalty. Otherwise, Britain beat Belgium by five matches to zero, West Germany by two wins and three draws and against the Netherlands Britain won three bouts, drew one and Knejens took his solitary win.

    The British team left the United Kingdom on Monday (24 May) for Japan, where they will train for the Olympics.
