  • Description

    NINETY-ONE CARS LEFT OSLO LAST NIGHT (FRIDAY) -- AS THE 964 MONTE CARLO RALLY GOT UNDER WAY. FOR THEM, MONTE CARLO WAS 2,900 MILES (4,600 KMS) AWAY. OSLO WAS ONE OF THE NINE EUROPEAN STARTING POINTS.

    SWEDEN'S ERIC CARLSSON, DRIVING A SAAB, WAS AIMING FOR A HIT-TRICK. LAST YEAR HE BECAME THE FIRST DRIVER IN 30 YEARS TO WIN THE RALLY TWICE IN SUCCESSION. HIS SKILL IN ALPINE COUNTRY WAS THE TELLING FACTOR, BUT THIS YEAR VERY LITTLE SNOW IS REPORTED EN ROUTE.

    OTHER CARS LEAVING OSLO:-
    No. 4 - I. WOLLERT AND H. LJUNGKVIST (SWEDEN, SAAB);
    No. 5 - B. LUNDBERG AND B. REHNFELT (SWEDEN, FORD FALCON)
    AND I. TRANNA AND S. LINDSTROM (SWEDEN, VOLVO).

    MEANWHILE, STARTERS FROM GLASGOW ARRIVED AT DOVER TONIGHT (SATURDAY) FOR THE CROSS-CHANNEL FERRY TRIP TO BOULGNE, IN FRANCE. ALL 27 CARS WERE REPORTED TO HAVE ARRIVED SAFELY AFTER THE TRIP FROM THE NORTH.

    ALL BUT TWO OF THEM WERE BRITISH TEAMS -- AND ALL ARRIVED WITH PLENTY OF TIME TO SPARE. THE ONLY DANGER THEY ENCOUNTERED HAD BEEN FROM ANIMALS WANDERING ACROSS THE ROAD DURING THE LAST LEG THROUGH THE NEW FOREST IN HAMPSHIRE. BUT AHEAD OF THEM LIES THE TOUGH MOUNTAIN PASSES IN FRANCE.

    THE CIS WERE DRIVEN INTO THE FERRY'S HOLD -- AND THE DRIVE TOOK A WELL-EARNED REST.
