  • Description

MONSIEUR RENE MAHEU, DIRECTOR-GENERAL OF UNESCO, ARRIVED IN DAKAR LAST WEEK FOR AN OFFICIAL VISIT. HE IS THE GUEST OF PRESIDENT LEOPOLD SENGHOR AND OF THE NEWLY-FORMED GOVERNMENT OF PRIME MINISTER ABDOU DIOUF.

MONSIEUR MAHEU IS VISITING DAKAR TO OFFICIATE AT THE INAUGURATION OF THE UNESCO REGIONAL BUREAU OF EDUCATION FOR AFRICA. THERE ARE TWO OTHER REGIONAL BUREAUS OF EDUCATION SET UP BY UNESCO - ONE IN BANGKOK, ESTABLISHED IN 1961 TO SERVE ASIA, AND ONE IN SANTIAGO, CHILE, ESTABLISHED IN 1965 FOR LATIN AMERICA AND THE CARIBBEAN.

THE BUREAU IN SENEGAL WILL ORIENTATE ITS PROGRAMMES ACCORDING TO THE DIFFERENT NEEDS AND OBJECTIVES OF THE AFRICAN COUNTRIES, BEARING IN MIND THE DIFFERENT CULTURES. THAT THE INAUGURATION SHOULD TAKE PLACE AT THIS TIME IS SIGNIFICANT BECAUSE 1970 IS INTERNATIONAL EDUCATION YEAR. UNESCO HAS ALREADY AIDED EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMMES IN SENEGAL WHICH INCLUDE THE UNIVERSITY, PRIMARY SCHOOLS, TEACHING COLLEGES, AND A COLLEGE OF LIBRARY SCIENCE.

MONSIEUR MAHEU, DIRECTOR-GENERAL OF UNESCO SINCE 1959, IS ACCOMPANIED ON HIS VISIT BY MONSIEUR JEAN KABORE, HEAD OF THE AFRICAN DIVISION OF RELATIONS WITH MEMBER STATES. HE WAS GREETED AT THE AIRPORT BY MONSIEUR AKIOUNE SENE, SENEGALESE MINISTER OF CULTURE, AND BY MEMBERS OF THE CABINET. HE MET MEMBERS OF UNESCO FROM DAKAR, BEFORE MEETING WITH PRESIDENT SENGHOR. DURING HIS VISIT TO THE UNIVERSITY, MONSIEUR MAHEU WAS PRESENTED WITH A GIFT BY THE RECTOR.
