    ROYAL AIR FORCE AIRCRAFT FROM AKROTIRI BASE IN NICOSIA, CYPRUS HAVE MOUNTED A LARGE-SCALE SEARCH FOR WRECKAGE OF THE COMET 4 JET WHICH CRASHED IN THE EASTERN MEDITERRANEAN YESTERDAY MORNING (THURSDAY). THE COMET EN ROUTE TO NICOSIA FROM LONDON VIA ATHENS, DISAPPEARED WITHOUT WARNING, KILLING 66 PASSENGERS AND CREW. A ROYAL AIR FORCE HASTINGS JET AIRCRAFT WAS FIRST TO SPOT THE WRECKAGE -- LATER MORE AIRCRAFT AND A RAF LAUNCH JOINED IN A MASSIVE SEA AND AIR SEARCH FOR WRECKAGE.

    THE HASTINGS WHICH FIRST SIGHTED THE WRECKAGE WAS PILOTED BY FLIGHT LIEUTENANT DENNIS KING. IN THE CREW WERE FLIGHT LIEUTENANT O'BRIEN, THE NAVIGATOR, FLYING OFFICER J.A. STUBBS FLIGHT SERGEANT W. TATTERSALL, QUARTERMASTER, AND SERGEANT S. JONES, RADIO OPERATOR.

    THE CREW OF THE HASTINGS JET RETURNED TO THE BASE AT AKROTIRI TO REPORT ON THE WRECKAGE DISCOVERY.

    AIRCRAFT AND OTHER RESCUE SHIPS HAVE NOW FOUND AT LEAST 60 BODIES. MANY OF THE BODIES ARE BEING TAKEN TO THE ISLAND OF RHODES, WHERE DOCTORS ARE WAITING TO CARRY OUT POST MORTEM INVESTIGATIONS.

    THE AIRCRAFT, OWNED BY BRITISH EUROPEAN AIRWAYS, WAS BUILT IN 1961. THE BEA GENERAL MANAGER, CAPTAIN WILLIAM BAILLIE, SAID YESTERDAY: "IT WAS THE MOST AMAZING TYPE OF ACCIDENT OF THIS DAY AND AGE, BECAUSE IT HAPPENED FROM A CRUISING ALTITUDE OF 29,000 FEET."
