  • Description

NEARLY 50,000 PEOPLE ARE TO BE EVACUATED FROM THREATENED AREAS FOLLOWING FLOODING OF THE RUFIJI RIVER IN SOUTHERN TANZANIA THIS WEEK.

THE RUFIJI USUALLY FLOODS AT THE BEGINNING OF THE LONG RAINY SEASON AND LAST YEAR NEARLY TWO MILLION PEOPLE WERE VIRTUALLY CUT OFF FROM OTHER PARTS OF THE COUNTRY.

AERIAL SURVEYS OF THE STRICKEN AREAS INDICATE THAT VILLAGES ARE NOT SERIOUSLY FLOODED THIS SEASON AND AUTHORITIES IN TOWNS ON HIGH GROUND UNAFFECTED BY THE FLOODS ARE PREPARING TO ACCOMMODATE PEOPLE WHOSE HOMES HAVE BEEN WASHED OUT.

CROPS ARE THE MAJOR CASUALTY OF THE SEASONAL FLOODING THIS YEAR.

UTETE, ONE OF THE REGION'S MAIN TOWNS HAS NOT BEEN AFFECTED AND IS EXPECTED TO BECOME A CENTRE FOR RELIEF WORK.
