President Ahmed Hassan al- Bakr's meeting with Dr. Kurt Waldheim,described at a press conference held Tuesday (18/12), at Baghdad - Palace by the UN Secretary - General as fruitful, positive and helped in increasing his understanding of Iraq's position towards present international issues.
Dr. Waldheim, expressed at the beginning of the conference his - thanks to the President and the Iraqi government for inviting him and giving him the opportunity to visit the country.
He also praised the backing given by the Iraqi government for the United Nations and its various organisations.
In reply to a question concerning the effect of President Bakrs call for treating the energy problems and other vital issues through the international body, Dr. Waldheim, said "The United Nations paid great attention to this issue, which treated by the special and general session of the General Assembly.
Replying to another question on the setting up of blocs by industrialised countries against oil - producing countries and the threatens made to occupy oil wells in these countries, the UN Secretary - General stressed that all problems should be solved by understanding and cooperation and not by confrontation.
Another question concerned the stand of the Nations towards the continuous aggression of the Zionist entity against the Arab people, Dr. Waldheim, replied by saying that the Middle East issue remains extremely critical and all efforts should be made to arrive at fruitful results, adding that the Palestine cause is regarded as a fundamental issue.
"It is the most important in the Middle East and should be treated urgently", he added.
The UN Secretary - General rejected accusations of the industrial - countries against the UN for its stand beside the developing countries saying" the world organisation supports the legitimate interests of all member countries and stemming from that the Third World has legitimate interests which should be taken into consideration at the United Nations.
Dr. Waldheim, pointed out to the failure of the old economic system even in the industrialised countries and to the poverty and starvation condition of two thirds of the world.
He said that the world should live in continuous peace and stability. The conference, attended by local, Arab and international reporters and news agencies lasted an hour.
