  • Description

Heavy fighting between Christians and Moslems in the Lebanese city of Tripoli had died down to sporadic firing on Tuesday (9 September).

As the battles became less severe, people began emerging into the streets of Lebanon's second largest city, many shops re-opened and traffic became quite heavy.

The main coastal highway running south to Beirut was also re-opened after gunmen withdrew from roadblocks.

There are no casualty figures for Tuesday's fighting, but police sources believe at least 100 people have been killed in the past week's struggle between feuding religious groups.

The Lebanese Government held an emergency Cabinet meeting on Tuesday .. the third in as many days .. and Premier Rashid Karami proposed a series of measures to deal with the violence.

It's believed these will include the sending of the army to intervene .. probably under a new commander .. if the fighting continues.

The present violence broke out with a gun battle after a car accident eight days ago and vendetta killings have kept it going ever since.
