  • Description

The first plane load of American dependents evacuated from South Vietnam arrived at San Francisco International Airport late Tuesday (9 February).

There were nine mothers and 13 children aboard. One of the mothers told newsmen: "I didn't want to come back without my husband, but that's the Army".

The 22 dependents were the vanguard of nearly 1,900 ordered out of South Vietnam by President Johnson after the air attack Sunday on North Vietnam. Full evacuation is expected to take nine days.

Tan Son Nhut Airport at Saigon was the scene of many tearful farewells as wives and children took leave of uniformed husbands and fathers.
