    As a tribute to this year's Bicentennial celebrations in the United States, four vintage cars have started a round-the-world rally.

    SYNOPSIS: The cars began their journey of more than six thousand miles in Istanbul, Turkey, on Tuesday (15 June). The four cars taking part are a 1911 Model T Ford, a 1912 Detroit-Abbott, a 1914 Dodge brothers and a 1909 Franklin. The drivers come from various parts of the United States. The route will take them through eleven European countries before the cars are taken abroad the Queen Elizabeth II liner in England for the journey to the United States.

    The race has been given official recognition as part of the bicentennial celebrations, and organisers say it has great potential to attract world-wide attention and co-operation.

    Celebrations have been planned in many countries along the route, and one of the highlights will be in Paris on the 4th of July. Special ceremonies are to be held there to mark Independence Day. Another important part of the race will be the last leg, due to end in San Francisco on August the sixth. Then, the drivers will be recreating the first leg of the famed 1908 great race from New York. That was the inspiration for this event.
