Background: President William Tolbert of Liberia has made a one-day visit to Algeria for talks with President Chadli Benjedid. Their discussions ranged from bilateral relations to developments in Africa, particularly the conflict over the future of the Western Sahara.
SYNOPSIS: President Tolbert, accompanied by his finance minister, was greeted at Algiers airport by President Benjedid and government officials. The Liberian President said he was bringing a message of friendship, unity and solidarity for the Algerian people.
It was not President Tolbert's first rip to Algeria, but this visit was described as especially timely. Both countries have similar foreign policy aims, including their attitude towards the situation in the Western Sahara. Algeria backs the Polisario guerrillas, who are fighting for the independence of the territory.
The two presidents also discussed the effectiveness of the Organisation of African Unity and matters to be considered at the future summit of non-aligned nations, which will be held in Algiers. President Tolbert has often spoken out against any superpower involvement in Africa.
