  • Description

An anti-government group attacked the United States owned General Motors building in Montevideo, Uruguay on Thursday (19 June) setting fire to the structure and causing damage estimated at one million dollars. (General Motors is the largest American automobile manufacturer.)
Police said two people dressed as police officers and armed with machine guns tied up two watchmen at the General Motors Centre and they sprayed offices and automobiles with a hose attached to a gasoline pump. They then set fire to the building and automobiles.

The attack came one day before Governor Rockefeller arrived in Uruguay. Police attribute the attack to elements of the clandestine Tupamaros National Liberation Movement, a group that favours the political philosophy of the People's Republic of China.

Most of the offices in the building, and at least six automobiles, were destroyed by the time firemen arrived.
