  • Description

Reggio Calabria and Catanzaro, the two southern Italian towns disputing the right to be the provincial capital, met in a soccer match yesterday (Wednesday November 25). Because of fears that it might spark off renewed rioting, the match was played in Florence, 1,000 kilometres (625 miles) away from the troubled region. Reggio Calabria won the second division fixture 1-0.

The 2,000 Reggio supporters who travelled the distance to Florence went wild with joy when inside-forward Sironi headed home the only goal of the match, 17 minutes into the first half. But there were no reported clashes between rival supporters.

Reggio Calabria has seen five months of bloody rioting over the decision by Italy's central government to appoint Catanzaro as the regional capital. Three people have so far died in the disturbances and hundreds more injured.

Catanzaro kicked off in the match and put early pressure on the Reggio side But after 17 minutes Sironi headed the winning goal from a finely centred ball. Despite heavy pressure in the remainder of the match, the red-shirted Reggio defence refused to give way and they held on tot their single goal advantage to score an all-important victory.
