  • Description

The streets of Ouagadougou, capital of Upper Volta, are thronged with bicycles and mopeds which provide the most popular forms of transport for the city's half million inhabitants.

A bicycle costs about 12,000 francs CFA (GBP 24 pounds sterling) while a moped from the french manufacturers, Peugeot, costs around 38 thousand francs CFA (GBP 75 pounds sterling). They are not only cheaper than cars but reflect the transportation customs of the French, who also use mopeds as a low-cost transport. Although there is a bicycle assembly plant in Upper Volta, the country is essentially reliant on French imports. Upper Volta gained her independence from France in 1960.

SYNOPSIS: Trade in bicycles and mopeds was brisk in Ouagadougou last week, despite the uncertainty caused by the drought that grips Upper Volta, creating immense economic and social problems.
