Background: The Irish situation -- and four men appeared on arms charges in the Irish Republic on wednesday (October 20) following a two-hour border gunbattle with British army troops. Demonstrators paraded outside the court during the 20-minute hearing, in which the four men refused to acknowledge the proceedings and sat in the dock eating sandwiches and reading a newspaper. In London, meanwhile a group of demonstration, including four members of the British and Northern Ireland Parliaments, continued a sit-in protest outside the Prime Minister's residence in Downing Street. They were complaining about the Government's policy on Northern Ireland, particularly internment, and two to of the M.P. 's were on a hunger strike as well.
