    Australian tennis star Miss. Evonne Goolagong reached the women's singles final of the Australian tennis championships in Melbourne for the fourth year running on Monday (December 31). She beat fellow countrywoman Kerry Melville 7-6, 5-7, 6-1 in a difficult match.

    Miss. Melville started well taking the first set to a tie-break before going under, and coming back from 3-0 down to win the second set 7-5.

    The crowd expected an equally close final set but both girls had suffered leg cramps, and Melville was still in pain, and could only offer token resistance. Goolagong swept through 6-1, and went on to beat Chris Evert of the United States in a similarly tough final.

    SYNOPSIS: Australian tennis star Evonne Goolagong serves to Kerry Melville in her bid to reach the finals of the Australian open tennis championships at Melbourne's Kooyong courts on Monday.

    Miss. Goolagong was anxious to reach the finals for the fourth year running and beat United States Chris Evert for the second time in a fortnight. Miss. Evert made the final by beating Julie Heldman of the United States six-two, six-three but Miss. Melville was giving her fellow countrywoman a harder fight.

    With the score at six games each the first set went to a tie breaker. Miss. Melville stood to lose the set if she lost this service point.

    Miss. Melville lost the fist set after this stubborn rally by Miss. Goolagong, but she came back from three games down to win the second.

    The crowd was hoping for an equally exciting final set but the lengthy exhausting match gave both players leg cramps. Miss. Melville was still in pain in the final set and could only offer token resistance.

    Miss. Goolagong swept through by six games to one.

    After this victory she went on to beat here American rival Chris Evert in a final which followed a similar pattern to this game with Miss. Goolagong once more turning the match with a crushing last set.
