British Prime Minister Mr. Edward Heath arrived in Cyprus on Wednesday (6 January), an route for the Commonwealth Prime Minister's Conference in Singapore. It is the first visit by a British Prime Minister to the island in its ten years of independence.
Mr Heath held separate talks with the two leaders of Cyprus. He had lunch with President Makaries, head of the Greek community, and later met Dr. Kutchuk, Vice-President and leader of the Turkish faction.
Mr Heath described the talks as "a very satisfactory exchange of views". He assured both leaders of Britain's continuing support for a reconciliation between Greeks and Turks, and for a unified island.
The British Prime Minister was met at the airport by Air Marshal Sir Derek Hodgkinson, Commander British Forces Near East.
