Background: At a glittering ceremony in Kuala Lumpur, Malaya's third Paramount Ruler Syed Sir Putra was formally installed, January 4. Tunku Abdul Rahman Hall in Kuala Lumpur was packed with dignitaries - sultans of Malay States, the Sultan of Brunei, Singapore's Head of State Inche Yusof Bin Ishak, Cabinet Ministers and the Diplomatic Corps.
A fanfare announced the arrival of the Paramount Ruler - elected by the rulers to Malaya's highest office last September - and his consort. They entered the chamber preceded by the Grand Chamberlain and flanked by the Royal Mace Bearers. Preceding them were retainers bearing the ceremonial swords, Malayan daggers, and other royal regalia. The royal orchestra, which plays only on such ceremonial occasions, struck up "Long Live the King".
The Paramount Ruler and his consort approached the dais with its two intricately carved high thrones. The Holy Koran, the proclamation of installation and the written oath lay on a small table in front of the richly decorated throne.
Another fanfare...and Prime Minister Tunku Abdul Rahman solemnly walked up to the throne to read the proclamation of installation to the assembly. On behalf of his cabinet and the people of Malaya, the Premier pledged loyalty to the Paramount Ruler.
Then the Grand Chamberlain took the Kris of State and mounted slowly to the fifth tier of the dais. The Paramount Ruler, resplendent in Malay national costume, took the Kris, unsheathed it, kissed it once, and placed it on the table beside the throne. This act symbolised the taking of the oath by the Paramount Ruler, and his pledge to work for the welfare of the people of Malaya.
A 21-gun salute was fired outside to mark the end of the ceremony. Another fanfare..and the royal couple descended from the dais to retire from the hall. Guests stood up as a mark of respect to the new Paramount Ruler and his consort.
