    M. GASTON NAESSENS, THE FRENCH BIOLOGIST WHOSE SERUM IS BEING USED TO TREAT CHILD LEUKEMIA?

  • Description

    M. GASTON NAESSENS, THE FRENCH BIOLOGIST WHOSE SERUM IS BEING USED TO TREAT CHILD LEUKEMIA VICTIMS AT HIS CORSICAN CLINIC TODAY (SATURDAY) ARRIVED IN LONDON, HE WAS ON HIS WAY TO EDINBURGH, FOR TALKS WITH A SCOTTISH BUSINESSMAN WHO HAD OFFERED HIM AN ANNUAL GRANT OF GBP3,000 TO DEVELOP THE SERUM IN BRITAIN.

DURING A STOPOVER IN PARIS, HOWEVER, M. NAESSENS TOLD REPORTERS HE WOULD DECLINE THE GRANT. HE SAID HE WOULD GIVE HIS REASONS WHEN HE MET THE BUSINESSMAN, MR. DONALD B. DAVIE, OF STONEHAVEN.

THE FRENCH BIOLOGIST SAYS HIS TREATMENT SHOULD BE ABLE TO ACT ON ALL FORMS OF CANCER, THOUGH LEUKEMIA IS THE TYPE WHICH RESPONDS MOST EASILY TO THE SERUM IN ITS PRESENT STATE. HE CLAIMS IT HAS CURED "A VERY HIGH PERCENTAGE" OF ABOUT 500 CANCER CASES WHICH, HE SAYS, THE HAS TREATED SINCE 1950.

IN CORSICA, THE GOVERNMENT-APPOINTED EXPERT INVESTIGATING THE SERUM TODAY WARNED THAT NEW INFORMATION CONFIRMED IT WAS ESSENTIAL THAT THE SERUM BE SUBMITTED TO REGULATION TESTS. THE EXPERT, PROFESSOR PIERRE DENOIX, SAID HE HAD GIVEN NO AUTHORISATION FOR THE CONTINUATION OF TREATMENT OR THE START OF NEW TREATMENT. IT HAD NOT YET BEEN PROVED THAT THIS HAD ANY EFFECT ON CANCER OR LEUKEMIA.
