DR. KAUNDA: "We condemn South Africa's intervention very strongly indeed, but we also condemn intervention by other people, other countries, and call for a ceasefire. We that call for a government of national unity. We believe that this is the only way in which this problem is going to be solved in the interest of Angola. This I would say is the situation. Whether or not the two sides would find them an answer, we don't know. But we hope and pray that God would show us the way out of this impasse so that we can stop these mass murders of innocent men, women, and children."



SIR SERETSE KHAMA: "If we are to take a decision of that nature and say that it is this particular party MPLA that should be accepted as the party which should be the governing party of Angola, maybe we are dissatisfied with the FNLA, we are dissatisfied with UNITA and perhaps, instead of coming together this confrontation would continue in the bush or wherever it is."

Background: Zambian President Kenneth Kaunda and President Sir Seretse Khama of Botswana re-affirmed their conviction that the only solution to the Angolan crisis is joint government by the three liberation movements, at a news conference in Nairobi on Monday (12 January).

The two Presidents passed through the Kenyan capital on their way home from the Organisation of African Unity (OAU) Summit on Angola in Addis Ababa.

Both men left the summit early because of prior commitments, but both stood by their call for a ceasefire in the war-torn country and the formation of a government of national unity.

Sir Seretse said that if the OAU recognised the Popular Movement for the Liberation of Angola (MPLA) it might "prolong the struggle and killing in Angola."
"We feel it would be improper to recognise the MPLA without taking into consideration the views of the other parties which to exist -- nobody can deny they exist," he said.

Dr. Kaunda condemned all foreign intervention in Angola and said he prayed for an end of the "mass murders of innocent men, women and children."
