    RESIDENTS OF DENVER, COLORADO ARE CHARGING THAT THE U.S. ARMY'S DECISION TO UNLOAD POISON GAS AT THE ROCKY MOUNTAIN ARSENAL IS ENDANGERING THE CITY'S POPULATION. THE ARSENAL IS DIRECTLY UNDER THE FLIGHT TAKEOFF A PATTERN OF DENVER'S BUSY STAPLETON AIRPORT AND RESIDENTS FEAR A CRASH WOULD RELEASE THE LETHAL GAS.

    WORK BEGAN ON THURSDAY (22 MAY) TO UNLOAD THE NERVE, MUSTARD, TEAR GAS CONTAINERS FROM RAILWAY CARS TO STORE IT.

    THE ARMY SAYS THAT THE DANGERS HAVE BEEN EXAGGERATED AND THAT EVEN IF A PLANE CRASHED DIRECTLY INTO THE GAS CONTAINERS ONLY A SMALL AMOUNT WOULD ESCAPE. AN ARMY SPOKESMAN ADDED THAT EXPERIENCED CREWS ARE AVAILABLE TO HANDLE THE TRANSFER.

    ORIGINALLY THE ARMY HAD PLANNED TO SHIP THE GAS NOW OBSOLETE BY RAIL TO THE EAST COAST WHERE IT WAS TO BE PLACED ON SHIPS AND DROPPED INTO THE OCEAN. THERE WAS PUBLIC OPPOSITION, TO THIS PLAN BECAUSE OF POTENTIAL DANGER DURING SHIPMENT AND IT WAS DROPPED.

    DISPOSITION OF THE GAS IS TO BE DECIDED BY A TERN FROM THE NATIONAL ACADEMY OF SCIENCES, BUT BECAUSE THE STUDY WILL TAKE AT LEAST 40 DAYS AND FEES FOR USING THE RAIL SIDING HAVE ALREADY AMOUNTED TO 200,000 DOLLARS, THE ARMY DECIDED TO UNLOAD THE GAS CONTAINERS AND AWAIT THE ACADEMY'S DECISION.
