  • Description

Irish troops bound for United Nations service in the Congo parade in Dublin before Premier Sean Lemass, July 20. A total of 650 men will be sent; their commanding officer, Commandant Joseph Adams, has flown on ahead to make arrangements for their deployment and use.

This is the first occasion on which troops of an independent Ireland have served outside their own country, although "the Fighting Irish" have a great centuries-old martial reputation. Ireland's constitution forbade the use of her troops overseas and the Dail (Parliament) passed a special law, July 20, allowing this contingent - composed entirely of volunteers - to go the Congo.
