  • Description

Cypress Gardens, Florida was the site of the first National Delta Wing tournament on Sunday (21 May). Delta wing is a type of kite that a man can hold onto. The competitors started their flights on water-skis. They were pulled by power boats until they reached sufficient altitude, to release the line.

The tournament was scored on the length of the flight, the number of ninety-degree turns made, and a special bonus for landing within a ten-foot (3 meter) square area marked in the water.

Paul Solovsky, a plumber who moved to Florida so he could do more flying, performed a perfect landing to win the silver trophy and the 500 dollar (GBP193) cash award.

SYNOPSIS: Manned kite flying had its first United States tournament on Sunday. Men on water skis were towed behind speed boats at Cypress Gardens, Florida. The object of the competition was to stay aloft as long as possible, make as many ninety-degrees turns as possible, and then land within a ten-foot square area marked in the water.

The kites ranged from thirteen to sixteen feet (four meters to four-point-nine meters) across and has as much as 190 feet (17.6 meters) of sail area.

During the qualifying rounds two fliers got into trouble. One crashed into a palm tree and the other made a forced landing in a car park. Neither was injured but their kites were badly damaged. Most fliers crashed into the water.

They were permitted to fly with ??? without their skis, and to use whatever means they could to get as close ??? the landing site as possible.

Some of the fliers even resorted to unusual body movements.

Originally 29 kite fliers entered the National Delta Wing competition, but only seven made it to these final rounds.

Paul Solovsky, a plumber who moved to Florida to get more flying time from his kite, flies over land and water. He made best use of the 20 knot winds and the rising hot air over the land. Solovsky landed exactly in the middle of the target area to get an extra 50 points and the victory.

Solovsky collected 500 dollars cash and a silver plate for his first-place finish.
