  • Description

MORE THAN 200 PEOPLE OF ALL AGES TOOK PART IN A SPONSORED 10-MILE WALK ON SUNDAY, 29 DECEMBER, IN NDOLA TO RAISE MONEY FOR MISSION MEDIC-AIR, A VOLUNTARY ORGANISATION WHICH AIMS TO IMPROVE THE HEALTH STANDARDS IN RURAL ZAMBIA.

THE WALKERS WERE PAID 19 NGWEE (JUST OVER ONE SHILLING STERLING) BY EACH SPONSOR FOR EVERY MILE COVERED. THE TARGET WAS 5,000 KWACHA BUT THE TOTAL RAISED WAS 8,350 KWACHA (ABOUT GBP5,000 STERLING) WHICH WILL ENABLE MISSION MEDIC-AIR TO BUY ITS OWN AIRCRAFT SO THAT DOCTORS CAN VISIT THE WIDELY-SCATTERED MISSION HOSPITALS EASILY.

THE MAYOR OF NDOLA STARTED THE WALKERS OUTSIDE THE BROADWAY CINEMA. THEY WALKED THROUGH THE TOWN, THEN OUT INTO THE BUSH TO THE FINISHING POST AT THE BULL AND BUSH PUB ON THE SHORES OF THE KAFUBU DAM. AMONG THE HUNDREDS OF PEOPLE WAITING TO APPLAUD THE WALKERS WERE MEMBERS OF TRINIDAD'S TOP STEEL BAND, THE GAY DESPERADOES, WHO ALSO PLAYED AT THE START OF THE WALK.

WALKERS INCLUDED DR. LOWENSTEIN AND MR. R. CASSIRER, BOTH AGED 60, AND MRS. DINAH WRIGHT, ONE OF THE EARLIEST WOMEN TO FINISH, WHO WAS ACCOMPANIED ON THE FIRST 2-MILES BY HER 6-YEAR OLD DAUGHTER.
