  • Description

The twelve hostages, held for more than eighteen hours by five Arab guerrillas, arrived in Frankfurt and Rome on Wednesday (19 December) following their release in Kuwait on Tuesday (18 December).

Eight of the hostages -- including five Italian policemen -- arrived in Rome during Wednesday afternoon, on a special Lufthansa flight from Kuwait. They got an emotional and chaotic welcome from airport workers, police, air hostesses and journalists. As they landed at Fiumicino Airport, they could see the wrecked fuselage of the Pan-American Boeing 707 which the guerrillas destroyed with phosphorous bombs before racing aboard a nearby Lufthansa 'plane with them.

Four crew members of the hijacked Lufthansa airliner arrived in Frankfurt, West Germany on Wednesday night to an equally emotional welcome.

The hijackers themselves, who gave themselves up in Kuwait on Tuesday, are still being interrogated at an Army Camp. The guerrilla operation left thirty-three people dead -- thirty on the bombed Pan-American airliner.

The Kuwait government hasn't yet decided whether to put the hijackers on trial.
