  • Description

SOUTH KOREANS IN SEOUL HAVE BEEN UP IN ARMS AGAIN OVER GOVERNMENT MOVES TO REACH AGREEMENT -- AND SIGN A TREATY -- WITH A ONE-TIME COLONIAL RULER, JAPAN.

YESTERDAY (SATURDAY) AGREEMENT WAS REACHED, AFTER A DAY OF DEMONSTRATIONS THAT BROUGHT TRAFFIC TO A HALT FOR FOUR HOURS IN THE CAPITAL. OVER 1,000 POLICE WERE CALLED IN AND IN A THIRTY-MINUTE CLASH, SEVERAL DEMONSTRATORS WERE INJURED.

CRIES OF PROTEST WENT UP AS THE VISITING JAPANESE FOREIGN MINISTER, MR SHIINA, CONTINUED HIS TALKS FOR THE THIRD DAY WITH SOUTH KOREAN LEADERS. EARLIER HE HAD EGGS THROWN AT HIM.

LEADING THE DEMONSTRATORS WAS THE FORMER PRESIDENT, MR PO DUN YUN. IN A SPEECH, HE CALLED THE VISITING MINISTER A "SECOND ITCH" -- A REFERENCE TO THE NAME OF THE JAPANESE PRIME MINISTER WHO SIGNED THE TREATY OF ANNEXATION OF KOREA OF 60 YEARS AGO AND WAS ASSASSINATED BY A KOREAN.

ABOUT 300 OPPOSITION POLITICIANS TOOK PART IN THE DEMONSTRATION. DOZENS WERE ARRESTED. THERE HAVE BEEN SIMILAR PROTESTS BY OPPOSITION PARTIES IN JAPAN OVER A TREATY WITH SOUTH KOREA.
