    THE 149TH ANNIVERSARY OF GREEK INDEPENDENCE WAS CELEBRATED IN ATHENS YESTERDAY (WEDNESDAY) WITH THE TRADITIONAL MASS IN THE CATHEDRAL, FOLLOWED BY A MILITARY PARADE AT WHICH THE ARMY DISPLAYED ITS LATEST WEAPONS.

    THE GREEK REGENT, GENERAL ZOITAKIS, TOOK THE SALUTE IN PLACE OF EXILED KING CONSTANTINE.

    THE REGENT ATTENDED THE SERVICE IN THE CATHEDRAL IN COMPANY WITH HIS WIFE, PREMIER PAPADOPOULOS, AND THE OTHER MEMBERS OF THE CABINET.

    THE MILITARY PARADE WHICH FOLLOWED WAS WATCHED BY THOUSANDS OF PEOPLE. THEY SAW ABOUT A HUNDRED ARMOURED CARS AND TANKS RUMBLE THROUGH THE CITY CENTRE. CARRIERS TRANSPORTING ATOMIC MISSILES AND NEWLY FORMED HEAVY ARTILLERY UNITS ALSO TOOK PART, AS WELL AS CONTINGENTS OF COMMANDOS, INFANTRY, FROGMEN AND MARINES. FIGHTER PLANES ROARED OVERHEAD, AND OTHER AIRCRAFT FLEW LOW TO DROP MINIATURE PAPER FLAGS WITH THE EMBLEM OF THE ARMY REVOLUTION WHICH BROUGHT THE PRESENT REGIME INTO POWER IN APRIL 1967. MEMBERS OF THE GOVERNMENT LINED UP BEHIND THE REGENT ON THE SALUTING STAND.
