Annual Shakespeare birthday celebrations were held in Stratford-upon-Avon, Apr 23 - day of St. George, England's patron saint. Taking part or watching were representatives of many countries and of the theatre and literary world.
Outside the town's Shakespeare Memorial Theatre - on the banks of the Avon - schoolchildren performed English and Scottish country dances, and here the traditional procession of distinguished guests formed up to make its way to the house where Shakespeare was born 396 years ago, - stopping on the way for a ceremonial unfurling of the flags of the nations. Afterwards the procession went to the poet's tomb in a Stratford church for the wreath-laying ceremony.
Among those representing Commonwealth countries this year were the Australian High Commissioner, Sir Eric Harrison, and Lady Harrison, and Canadian representatives.
