  • Description

The report on Saturday (7 May) that South Viet Nam's premier Nguyen Cao Ky said that his government did not intend to quit for at least a year, has set off a wave of worry among the Buddhists in his country and some United States congressmen. It is now feared that South Viet Nam will not have a civilian government in October. The Buddhists feel that premier Ky had promised that his military regime would come to an end this coming autumn.

Premier Ky is reported to have made this statement in an interview with newsmen at a new South Vietnamese Air Force case at Can Tho, in the Mekong Delta.

In the interview, Ky said he considered the coming election to be only for a committee to draft a constitution, not for a National Assembly. He said he thinks a National Assembly election is at least a year away and he intends to stay in power until then.

In our film, Premier Ky said that if the elected Assembly is neutralist, Communist or tries to make peace with the Communist, he and the military will employ force to overthrow it. However, he added that he is confident that the people of South Viet Nam will not elect a Communist assembly.

Premier Ky a number of other military men are considering running for office in the elections.
