PRESIDENT MAKARIOS HAS CONDEMNED THE INCIDENTS AS "UNHOLY AND BARBARIC." DR.KUTCHUK, THE TURKISH CYPRIOT VICE-PRESIDENT, LATER BROADCAST TO THE TURKISH COMMUNITY, APPEALING FOR CALM.

    THE EXPLOSIONS WERE CUNNINGLY TIMED FOR 2 A.M. MOCK CANNONS WERE BEING FIRED AT THE SAME TIME IN THE INDEPENDENCE CELEBRATIONS. DR.KUTCHUK IS REPORTED AS SAYING: "... IT IS THE INTENTION OF CERTAIN GREEK CYPRIOTS TO CREATE NEW TROUBLES. EOKA DAY WILL BE CELEBRATED ON APRIL 1, AND I AM SURE THERE MAY BE NEW INCIDENTS."
