Background: Flying back from his visit to Bangui, Congo-Kinshasa's President Joseph Mobutu broke his return journey at his birthplace, Gbadolite. Accompanied by his wife, the President also travelled to Gemena for a reunion with his mother and younger brother.

Aside from reasons of sentiment, the President's visit to Gbadolite enabled him to discuss development in the area. He told local leaders that true progress consisted of the government planning to build schools and construct roads, backed by the enthusiasm of the people to carry out those plans.

Before his family reunion in Gemena, the President had further talks on development. He hopes this district will have first priority in national economic plan in 1980.

In a brief speech, he said that while all regions should have an equal opportunity for development, top priority would always have to given to those areas that were most backward.

With the business of state concluded, President Mobutu spent some time with his mother and younger brother in Gemena, before continuing his return journey to Kinshasa.
