Background: The Asian Games track and field events ended in Bangkok, Thailand, on Tuesday (December 15), with Japan taking 19 of the 35 gold medals. One race in which the Japanese were defeated, however, was the women's 800 metres -- won by Israel's Mrs. Hana Shezifi.
It was another stunning success for Mrs. Shezifi, mother of a young baby, who had earlier won the 1,500 metres. In the 800 metres, she shot quickly into the lead and stayed there for the full distance.
The only opposition came from Japan's Nobuko Kawano, but she was well behind as Mrs. Shezifi crossed the finishing line in two minutes six point five seconds, to chop four seconds of her own Asian Games record set four years ago. Isabel Cruz of the Philippines came third.
