Background: THE FUTURE OF BRITISH BUSINESSES AND COMMERCIAL ENTERPRISES IN INDONESIA IS CAUSING CONCERN IN BOTH POLITICAL AND TRADE CIRCLES IN LONDON.THERE HAS BEEN SO FAR ONLY AN AMBIGUOUS REPLY TO THE BRITISH GOVERNMENT'S REQUEST FOR MORE INFORMATION CONCERNING THE FATE OF FIRMS TAKEN INTO "PROTECTIVE CUSTODY".PRESIDENT SUKARNO IS REPORTED TO HAVE SAID THAT HIS GOVERNMENT HAS NO INTENTION OF NATIONALISING BRITISH FIRMS, BUT A SENIOR GOVERNMENT OFFICIAL QUALIFIED THIS ON SATURDAY BY SAYING THAT NATIONALISATION WAS OUT OF THE QUESTION "AT PRESENT".

THE SIZE OF BRITAIN'S ECONOMIC STAKE IN INDONESIA HAS BEEN ESTIMATED TO AMOUNT TO GBP160 MILLION.

ONE OF BRITAIN'S BIGGEST INTERESTS IS IN THE SHELL OIL GROUP, WHICH HAS WELLS AT PLADJU IN SUMATRA AND BALIKPAPAN IN KALIMANTAN.IT ALSO HAS REFINERIES AT PLADJU (SUMATRA), BALIKPAPAN (KALIMANTAN) AND A SMALL REFINERY AT TANDJONG PRIOK (DJAKARTA'S PORT-TOWN).

IN TEA, RUBBER, COFFEE AND PALM OIL PLANTATIONS, BRITISH INTERESTS REPRESENT 60-PER CENT OF THOSE STILL IN FOREIGN HANDS, OTHERS BEING CONTROLLED BY FRENCH, AMERICAN AND BELGIAN COMPANIES.MOST ARE IN SUMATRA AND JAVA, WITH A FEW IN KALIMANTAN (BORNEO).

UNDER THE AGRICULTURAL LAW OF 1960, ALL THE FOREIGN-OWNED ESTATES ARE DUR TO BE NATIONALISED BY 1980 OR AT THE EXPIRATION OF THEIR PRESENT LEASES.
