  • Description

More than 20 people are believed to have lost their lives when the 24,727-ton tanker, Esso Maracaibo, rammed the Lake Maracaibo Bridge destroying a 1,500 foot section of the bridge. Several cars were sent plunging into the waters of the lake and by yesterday (Thursday) four vehicles had been recovered.

The accident occurred on Tuesday as the tanker was heading out of the lake for a refinery at nearby Aruba. She lost electrical power and with her steering gear out of commission drifted helplessly against the bridge. The pre-stressed concrete pilings collapsed. The tanker was seriously damaged, but did not sink.

The bridge, which is five and a half miles long, cost 100 million dollars to build. It's estimated that repairs will take about six months and cost about two million dollars.
