  • Description

The secret negotiations for a Vietnam peace settlement resumed on Monday (8 January) in Paris.

Dr. Henry Kissinger, President Nixon's special envoy, and Hanoi's negotiator, Le Duc Tho, met in a villa owned by the French Communist party at Gif-sur-Yvette.

The meeting lasted four-and-a-half hours and they agreed to meet again on Tuesday (9 January).

It was their first meeting since they broke off talks on December 13, which was followed by intensive U.S. air raids on the Hanoi and Haiphong areas of North Vietnam.

Correspondents in Paris reported that Monday's resumption of talks appeared to take place in a chilly atmosphere. Le Duc Tho and Dr. Kissinger did not shake hands - at least publicly - as they had in meetings before the breakdown of the talks.

SYNOPSIS: The secret Vietnam peace talks resumed on Monday at a villa owned by the French Communist party in Paris. The North Vietnamese delegation, led by Le Duc Tho, was the first to arrive.

Shortly afterwards, a car belonging to the Untied States ambassador to Paris entered the grounds carrying President Nixon's special envoy, Dr. Henry Kissinger, and his aides.

The meeting between Dr. Kissinger and Le Duc Tho was the first between the two men since December the thirteenth, when they broke off negotiations and reported back to their respective governments. The break was followed by seventeen days of air raids by American bombers on the Hanoi and Haiphong areas of North Vietnam.

According to correspondents, Monday's resumption of talks took place in a chilly atmosphere. The two negotiators were not seen to shake hands publicly, as they had at sessions before last month's breakdown. The meeting lasted for four-and-a-half hours and, when it was over, neither Dr. Kissinger nor Le Duc Tho was prepared to make any comment.

But aides said they had agreed to meet again the following day... at another location. The two chief negotiators had said on their return to paris during the weekend that they had come for one more major effort to settle the war by peaceful means.
