Background: JIM CLARK, BRITAIN'S WORLD RACING CHAMPION IN 1963, TODAY (FRIDAY) ACHIEVED THE FIRST 100 MILES-AN-HOUR (160.92 K.P.H) LAP ON THE BRANDS HATCH CIRCUIT, IN KENT, SOUTHERN ENGLAND. HE WAS PRACTISING IN A FORMULA ONE LOTUS FOR TOMORROW'S RACE OF CHAMPIONS, WHICH OPENS THE BRITISH RACING CAR SEASON FOR 1965.

ALTOGETHER CLARK SPED ROUND THE TRACK AT MORE THAN 100 MILES-AN-HOUR IN THREE PRACTICE RUNS. HIS FASTEST LAP WAS ONE-MINUTE-34.9 SECONDS - AN AVERAGE SPEED OF 100.55 MILES-AN-HOUR (161.83 K.P.H.). BUT BY THE END OF THE TRIALS, 12 OF THE 23 DRIVERS ENTERED FOR THE RACE HAD BROKEN THE OFFICIAL LAP RECORD OF ONE-MINUTE-38.8 SECONDS.

IT WAS NOT A HAPPY DAY FOR WORLD CHAMPION JOHN SURTEES. AFTER MECHANICS WORKED ALL MORNING TO FIT A NEW ENGINE TO HIS WORKS FERRARI, THEY HAD TROUBLE GETTING IT TO FIRE ON ALL EIGHT CYLINDERS. THEN THERE WAS FUEL INJECTOR TROUBLE, BUT DESPITE THE DELAYS, HE MANAGED TO LAP THE CIRCUIT IN ONE-MINUTE-37.3 SECONDS - ALSO BREAKING THE OLD RECORD.

THE RACE DOES NOT COUNT TOWARDS THE WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP, BUT IT HAS ATTRACTED A WORLD CLASS FIELD. DRIVERS INCLUDE CLARK, HILL, SURTEES, MIKE SPENSE, DAN GURNEY, BRUCE MACLAREN, JO SIFFERT THE AND JO BONNIER. THE EVENT WILL BE RUN IN TWO 40-LAP HEATS, WITH THE GENERAL CLASSIFICATION BEING THE TOTAL TIME FOR EACH DRIVER.
