    Background: OSLO, NORWAY

The British runner David Moorcroft set a new world time for the 5,000 metre race with a superb run in Oslo, Norway, on July 7. He snipped six seconds off the old record held by Kenya's Henry Rono. The new time is 13:00:42 (13 minutes and 0.42 seconds). Moorcroft took the lead after three laps and steadily drew away from the field, finishing more than 20 seconds ahead of second place-getter, Ralph King of the United States. Third was Nick Rose of Britain. The 29-year-old Moorcraft was warmly congratulated by his supporters after the race.
