The first session of the National Assembly of united North and South Vietnam has been held in Hanoi. It followed an official government announcement of the reunification of the country, which was divided for over 100 years.
SYNOPSIS: Before the opening of the first session, National Assembly members and government leaders gathered in Ba Dinh Square to pay homage to the late President of North Vietnam, Ho Chi Minh.
They included his successor, President Ton Duc Thang, and from Sainom (Ho Chi Minh City), the Chairman of the National Liberation Front, Jr. N??? Huu Tho. Also present ??? deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defence, General Vo Nguyen Giap. All of them joined in a brief memorial ceremony for the late president in the Ho Chi Minh Memorial Hall.

The first duty of the 492 seat assembly is the long-awaited task of re-building the nation, following the overthrow of the United States-backed-South Vietnamese Government of President Nguyen Van Thieu. The Speaker of the National Assembly, Truong Chinh, warned that the task would be hard and said everyone must work hard for its successful completion.
Le Duan, First Secretary of the Communist Lao Dong (Workers) Party delivered a political report to the assembly. He said that the people were ready to build a socialist Vietnam.
