Background: The United Nations Middle East envoy, Dr. Gunnar Jarring, on Friday (25 Feb.) had a round of talks in Jerusalem with senior Israeli officials.
As the talks ended both sides described the meeting as "useful" -- but there were signs that Dr. Jarring had come no nearer to a breakthrough in his peace negotiations.
Israeli ministers made it clear they were not prepared to promise Dr. Jarring that Israel would withdraw to the armistice line which existed between Egypt and Israel before the 1967 war.
(Dr. Jarring is due to fly to Geneva on Sunday -- 27 Feb -- to report to the United Nations Secretary-General, Dr. Kurt Waldheim).
