  • Description

Survivors were helped ashore at Genoa through the night on Thursday (9 April) as 15,857-ton British freighter, London Valour, sank after being battered onto a harbour dyke. At least 13 of the 58 members of the crew -- including the Captain and two women-- died in what was one of the north Italian port's worst harbour disasters.

The freighter sank in heavy seas after being driven by wind of up to 50 miles (80 kms) per hour against the port dyke. Rescue boats and helicopters searched the waters around the disaster area looking for the 12 crew members who were missing.

Over a dozen ambulances rushed between the port and the main hospital carrying the 34 people who were injured to hospital.

Crowds estimated at up to 10,000 watched the rescue operations and traffic in the port area was completely paralysed.

The disaster occurred as the freighter waited outside the harbour for a berth. It began moving towards the dyke when hit by the high winds. Despite the efforts of a number of tugs to pull the ship clear, the London Valour hit the dyke.
