Background: We are living in the jet age, but we are governed by an Edwardian establishment mentality. Over the British people lies the chill frost of Tory leadership. They freeze initiative and they petrify imagination. They cling to privilege and power for the few, shutting the gates on the many. Tory society is a closed society in which birth and wealth have priority, in which the master and servant, landlord and tenant mentality predominates. The great weakness of the Conservatives is their failure even to try to represent the nation. We do not believe that a small minority of the British people, distinguished by their family connections or educational background have a unique right to positions of influence and power. We believe that Britain's future depends on the thrusting ability and even iconoclasms of millions of products of our grammar schools, our comprehensive schools, our technical schools and colleges, our secondary moderns and the rest who are today held down not only within the government party, but over a wide sector of industry. So this is what 1964 can mean, a chance for change, more than that, a time for resurgence, a chance to sweep away the grouse moor conception of national leadership.
