PUBLISHED BY GALLIMARD, "CREEZY" IS THE STORY OF THE ROMANCE BETWEEN A FRENCH MEMBER OF PARLIAMENT AND A COVER GIRL, IT IS M. MARCEAU'S FIRST NOVEL IN 14 YEARS.

    TRADITIONALLY, EACH YEAR THE TEN-MAN PRIX GONCOURT JURY MEETS IN THE RESTAURANT DROUANT IN PARIS - AND IT WAS FROM THERE THAT THEIR SECRETARY - GENERAL, M. PHILIPPE HERIAT, ANNOUNCED THE RESULTS TO THE PRESS. HE REPORTED THAT M. MARCEAU HAD WON THE GONCOURT ON THE THIRD ROUND OF VOTING.

    THE PRIZE, SET UP IN THE 19TH CENTURY IN THE WILLS OF THE FRENCH WRITER BROTHERS JULES AND EDMOND GONCOURT, IS WORTH ONLY 50 FRANCS (FOUR POUNDS STERLING OR 9.60 DOLLARS) BUT IS HIGHLY-SOUGHT FOR ITS PRESTIGE AND PROMOTIONAL VALUE.

    M. MARCEAU, WHO IS 56, BEGAN WRITING HIS FIRST NOVEL AT THE AGE OF EIGHT. HE WAS BORN IN CORTENBERG, BELGIUM, BUT HAS LIVED IN FRANCE SINCE 1950 AND IS A NATURALISED FRENCH CITIZEN. HE HAS WON SEVERAL PRIZES IN THE PAST FOR PLAYS AS WELL AS NOVELS - AND HIS BEST-KNOWN DRAMAS ARE "L'OEUF" (THE EGG) AND "LA BONNE SOUPE" (THE GOOD SOUP), WHICH HAVE BEEN TRANSLATED INTO SEVERAL LANGUAGES AND PUT ON IN MANY COUNTRIES. HE WAS A LITERARY AND ART CRITIC AND A PAINTER BEFORE BECOMING A WRITER.

    AFTER THE ANNOUNCEMENT OF THIS WINNING THE COVETED PRIZE, M. MARCEAU SIGNED COPIES OF "CREEZY" AT GALLIMARD, AND THEN SPOKE WITH REPORTERS.
