    THE 50TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE WORLD'S FIRST INTERNATIONAL PASSENGER SERVICE BETWEEN LONDON AND PARIS WAS CELEBRATED TODAY (AUGUST 25) BY A DAY TRIP TO PARIS BY SOME OF THE PIONEERS OF COMMERCIAL AVIATION.

    THE PASSENGERS WERE TAKEN ACROSS THE TARMAC ON A BUS OF THE PERIOD AS ON THE ORIGINAL FLIGHT THEY TOOK GROUSE AND WHISKY ON BOARD.

    AMONG THE PIONEERS ON THE FLIGHT WAS CAPTAIN JERRY SHAW WHO FLEW HOUNSLOW - LE BOURGET ON 26 AUGUST 1919. JUST OVER A MONTH LATER WHILE FLYING FROM LE BOURGET TO HOUNSLOW HE ENCOUNTERED A SNOW STORM AND DETERIORATING VISIBILITY WHILE OVER THE CHANNEL. CAPTAIN SHAW DECIDED TO LAND ON THE SEA ALONGSIDE A SMALL COASTAL VESSEL. HE AND HIS PASSENGER, STILL WEARING HIS BOWLER HAT, CLIMBED ONTO THE TAIL OF THE AIRCRAFT AND INTO A DINGHY.

    ALSO ON BOARD WAS WING COMMANDER MCINTOSH WHO MADE A COMMERCIAL FLIGHT HOUNSLOW - PARIS IN SEPTEMBER 1919. HE HAS LOGGED 27,000 HOURS FLYING TIME ON 143 TYPES OF AIRCRAFT.

    FIRST INTERNATIONAL SCHEDULED AIR SERVICE TOOK OFF FROM HOUNSLOW HEATH AERODROME AT 0910 HOURS, 25TH AUGUST 1919. THE AIRCRAFT USED WAS A DE HAVILLAND 4A, SINGLE ENGINE AIRPLANE, OPERATED BY AIR TRANSPORT AND TRAVEL LTD.

    PILOT WAS CAPTAIN "BILL" LAWFORD, AND CARRIED ONE PASSENGER, MR. STEVENSON-REECE, A LONDON JOURNALIST. ALSO ON BOARD WAS A SMALL QUANTITY OF CARGO: NEWSPAPERS, DEVONSHIRE CREAM, AND SEVERAL BRACE OF GROUSE. THE FLIGHT LANDED AT LE BOURGET AIRPORT, PARIS, 2 1/2 HOURS AFTER LEAVING HOUNSLOW. THE 220-MILE JOURNEY WAS FLOWN AT AN AVERAGE SPEED OF 100 M.P.
