  • Description

The Third Congress of the Organisation of Arab towns opened in Tunis on Monday (20 September). A record total of 80 towns are represented.

World experts on town planning will be addressing the congress, which has as its theme the planning of Arab towns.

The Congress is also an important political forum. On the opening day the Arab Mayor of Jerusalem Rouhi El Khatib spoke out strongly against Israeli expansion in Jerusalem. They planned, he said, to create a greater Jerusalem of nine hundred thousand Jews by 1985. It was made possible, he claimed, by the feebleness of the Arab world, the weakening of the Islamic Faith, and the indifference of the United Nations.

SYNOPSIS: The Third Congress of the Organisation of Arab towns opened in Tunis on Monday with the record number of 80 towns taking part. The five-day congress took place under the patronage of Tunisia's President Bourguiba, on the premises of the Tunisian Ministry of Labour.

The theme was the planning of Arab towns and int he context of world progress in town planning. Experts from a number of universities were due to address the meetings.

The World Federation of twinned towns sent observers to the Congress. The Federation has a proprietary interest since the idea of an Organisation of Arab towns was born when Tunisia hosted a Congress of the twinned-towns movement in 1966.

Politics has also had a place at the Tunis Congress. The Arab Mayor of Jerusalem Rouni El Khatib launched a vigorous attack on Israeli expansion in Jerusalem on Monday, saying Israel had plans for a greater Jerusalem of nine hundred thousand Jews by 1985.
