Background: Town Clerks and City Treasurers from 12 English-speaking African countries are attending the first week of a workshop on the management of big cities in Africa in the Kenyan capital, Nairobi.
When the first stage of the workshop, organised by the African Training and Research Centre in Administration for Development (CAFRAD), ends on Sunday (15 April), delegates will travel to the Egyptian capital, Cairo, for the second week. The third and fourth weeks of the workshop will be held in West Germany, ending on 5 May.
The workshop's main objective is to re-examine co-ordination as a tool in carrying out urban policies and development schemes. While in Nairobi, the delegates have been shown the internal workings and physical operations of the city by the municipal staff. A similar working tour will be arranged in Cairo and in the various West German cities which the delegates will visit.
Countries taking part in the workshop are Kenya, Egypt, Ethiopia, Ghana, Libya, Liberia, Malawi, Nigeria, Uganda, Sierra Leone, Sudan and Zambia. The address and welcome at Monday's (9 April) opening session was given by the Mayoress of Nairobi, Councillor Miss. M.W. Kenyatta. The Director of the German Foundation for Developing Countries, Dr. Joachim Krell, also gave an address.
