    A three-day seminar for English-speaking West African Journalists opened wednesday (3 January) in Accra, Ghana. The theme of the seminar is "National development and the Media" and it is being attended by journalists from Ghana, Gambia, Sierra Leone, Liberia, Nigeria and the Cameroun.

    Ghana's Commissioner for Labour, Cooperatives and Social Welfare, Major Kwame Assante, addressed the formal opening of the seminar at the Institute of Journalism.

    The meeting was organised by the International Press Institute and is designed to bring together English-speaking West African journalists to discuss their countries' common problems and how they can best serve their nations.

    SYNOPSIS: At the Institute of Journalism in Accra, Ghana, on wednesday, a group of journalists from six English-speaking West African countries gathered to take part in a seminar on "National Development and the Media".

    The seminar was officially opened by Major Kwame Asante, Ghana's Commissioner for Labour, Co-operatives and Social welfare. He told the journalists that "any developing country has to rely on its mass media to help in the task of nation building and development." He pointed out that "the media can focus attention on problems and goals of national development" and emphasised the Important role that the media must play in developing countries.

    The journalists from Ghana, Gambia, Sierra Leone, Liberia, Nigeria and the Cameroun will discuss, during their seminar, the best way they can serve their nation in over-coming their particular problems.
