  • Description

President Nicolae Ceausescu, of Rumania, has arrived in Portugal on a four day state visit. The visit is the first to Portugal by a Communist head of State.

Reports from the Portuguese capital, Lisbon, say President Ceausescu may attempt to seek the role of mediator in the Angolan war, in which rival liberation groups are fighting for supremacy before Portugal hands over independence to the African country in early November this year.

Rumania was the first Communist country to establish diplomatic relation with Portugal following the overthrow of the former Portuguese regime in April 1974.

Portuguese President, General Francisco da Costa Gomes made a state visit to Rumania in June of this year.

The Communist Party in Portugal has stated that it favours the handing over of independence to Angola in the form of a Government made up of the left-wing Popular Movement for the Liberation of Angola (MPLA).

However a recent demonstration in Lisbon by white Angolan refugees demanded that independence of Angola be handed over to the rival liberation organisation, the National Front for the Liberations of Angola (FNLA).

There are fears that the crisis in Angola may have repercussions in Portugal with the Portuguese political factions taking sides with the Angolan liberation movements.

The Portuguese Government has repeatedly stated that it will not hand over power in Angola to any one single liberation organisation.
