  • Description

The President of the Senegalese National Assembly, M. Amadou Cisse Dia, deputising for President Senghor, opened a National Conference in Dakar on Saturday (July 25) of Senegal's Health Service Workers.

Present were leading Senegalese Doctors and Hospital administrators to hear speeches and discuss their role as health workers in the Nation's development.

    M. Cisse Dia told the professional people present that they, like other highly skilled people, helped to determine the pace of Senegal's progress. The work among the working population both in the cities and in rural areas was absolutely vital.

He reminded them that the Senegalese Progressive Union Party had decided the previous year to hold national meetings of key professions as part of its practical socialist programme.

Members of the Party's Political Bureau were present at these conferences. Two of them, for teachers and students, had already been held, and after this medical conference would come the engineers, technicians, and economists.

Minister of Public Health Dr Daouda Sow also spoke to the delegates on the theme of economic and social development, quoting the World Health Organisation's definition of Good Health. It was, he said, not merely the absence of illness or disease, but a full state of mental and physical well-being. The possession of this kind of health was one of the fundamental rights of human beings today, said Dr Sow.
