Background: Thousands of people turned out in the centre of Athens to protest about the growing unemployment in the country. The rally, called by some eighty labour unions, marched towards the Greek parliament shouting their disenchantment with the Government's economic policies. The Prime Minister, Mr. Andreas Papandreou, and his Socialist Party (Pasok), inherited severe problems from the previous administration, and unemployment is currently running at some 7.5 per cent of the working population. With inflation running at more than twenty per cent and industrial production falling, the Government sees its continued membership of the European Economic Community (EEC) as vital, but many of the protestors held placards calling for Greece to leave the community. The demonstrators in Kotzia Square and although there had been fears that the protestors would clash with police and security officials, the march ended peacefully.
